Some of the members of this family moved from Bosnia to Paučina village of Rozaje, Montenegro at sometime around between the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century perhaps. It's unknown why and how they converted to Islam. Some of them moved to Turkey in 1960's with the migration wave, and acquired Turkish surnames Sancaktar and Mert, as foreign surnames were forbiden during that time in Turkey. Grlić family members can be found in Yıldırım Mahallesi, Bayrampaşa İstanbul today. Not all the people which carry the Sancaktar surname are members of Grlić family there are some other Yugoslav families use that surname such as Kardovići.
